Montemerano, in Tuscany, is a charming hamlet near Manciano. It is a medieval town, surrounded by battlements and nested among olive groves. It is a panel painting depicting a Madonna but with a curious element: a round hole has been sawn out at the bottom, probably to allow the passage of a cat when the painting was recycled as a door sometime in its history.
