Saturnia and Montemerano

Montemerano, in Tuscany, is a charming hamlet near Manciano. It is a medieval town, surrounded by battlements and nested among olive groves. In its narrow streets and pretty squares you will find wine shops and excellent restaurants. Visit the Church dedicated to Saint George, a showcase of many precious artworks, There are various cycles of frescoes, a magnificent polyptych by Sano di Pietro (XV Century) and the unusal Madonna della Gattaiola, literally the Madonna of the cat flap, the work of an artist known as the Master of Montemerano. It is a panel painting depicting a Madonna but with a curious element: a round hole has been sawn out at the bottom, probably to allow the passage of a cat when the painting was recycled as a door sometime in its history.
